Crochet fruit and vegetable bag – free pattern – American crochet terms

I have been thinking for a long time that I should crochet fruit and vegetable bags to use in the store to reduce my use of plastic bags and finally I got around to doing it.

I always have scrap yarn in my stash and I found some in pure cotton (in this particular case CaMaRoses Pima cotton 2/8) The crochet hook I used is size D (3 mm)

abbreviations:

  • sl st – slip stitch
  • ch – chain
  • sc – single crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • tog – together
  • tr – treble crochet

I have taken a long piece of the yarn (approx. 6,5 feet – 2 meters), folded in half and twisted both strands tightly in the same direction. I then folded it again, and let it twist in the opposite direction and finished off by tying a knot. I use this to tie around the bag.

Twisted ”string”

The bottom is identical for all sizes.

Bottom of the bag

Ch 5 ch make a ring with a sl st.

Row 1: Crochet 12 sc around the ring and end with 1 sl st in the first sc.

Row 2: 4 ch (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch) and then 1 dc in sc, ch 1 and finish with 1 sl st in the 3rd ch (12 dc and 12 ch).

Row 3: 6 ch (counts as 1 dc and 3 ch) and then 1 dc, 3 ch to the end. Finish with 1 sl in the 3rd ch.

Row 4: sl st to 1st loop, ch 3 (= 1st dc), 2 dc, ch 3 and 3dc in the next loop until the end. Finish with 1 sl st in 3rd ch.

Row 5: ch 3 (= 1st dc), 1 dc in the next 2 dc, 1 dc in the next loop, ch 3, 1 dc in the same loop, 1 dc in each of the next 3 dc, 1 dc in next loop to the end. Finish with 1 dc in the same loop and a sl st in 3rd ch.

Row 6: sl st to 2nd dc, ch 3 (= 1st dc), 2 dc tog, ch 3, skip 1 st, 1 sc in loop, ch 3, skip 1 st, 3 dc tog, skip 1 st, 1 sc in the loop, 3 ch to end. Finish with 1 sl st in first 3 dc tog.

Row 7 (last row on bottom): 1 sc in sl st, ch 5, 1 sc in the top of the 3 dc tog, 5 ch, 1 sc in sc. Repeat until the last sc before last loop and end with 4 ch, 1 sl st in sc.

For the dark pink (black currant sorbet) bag continue with round 8 as far as you want (I did 37 rounds) and on the last round finish with a sl in the 1st first sc.

ROUND 8: 1 sc in sc from previous round, ch 5, 1 sc in next loop to end and finish with 3 ch, 1 dc in first sc.

Finish off with a row of 4 sc in each loop and end with a sl st in the first sc). Weave in ends.

This size is perfect for e.g. zucchinis, bananas, eggplants and cucumbers.

For the other three colors, continue as follows:

Row 9: 1 sc in sc from previous round, ch 7, 1 sc in next loop to end and finish with 4 ch, 1 tr in first sc.

Repeat row 9 as far as you want (my blue is 15 rounds, the yellow 20 and the pink 27v. For all sizes – finish off with a row of 5 sc in each loop and end with a sl st in the first sc). Weave in ends.

These bags will be slightly lower and “chubby” and fit e.g. onions, oranges, potatoes, tomatoes, apples and kohlrabi.
